Why You So Black?

» 17 July 2009 »

I started performing stand-up comedy around 2004. I had been working in corporate America for a few years and I hated everything about it. I didn’t hate it because it was soooo racist (I worked in what was affectionately referred to as the “I.T. Ghetto” at a primarily black company in Brooklyn, so race wasn’t a problem . . . well . . . depends on what you see as a problem), I hated it because I had always wanted a more creative outlet. When I first stepped onstage, I felt like I had come home.

Funny enough, when I stepped OFFstage, people would question me as if I just admitted to signing off on CIA kill squads that were never approved by Congress. I’d hear comments like:

“Where are you from?
“You said you’re from Brooklyn. You can’t be from Brooklyn.”
“I’ve never heard a Black guy sound like that.”
“Negro, you ain’t Black!”

I didn’t really talk about being Black onstage. I would tell amusing (or so I thought) anecdotes about my family and other vanilla (no pun intended) subjects. But my demeanor and speech pattern caused people to pause. They kept waiting for me to acknowledge that I was, IN FACT, Black and yet I wasn’t falling into the acceptable Black mold.

The first joke I ever wrote to acknowledge this was: “Greetings and salutations, one and all. My name is Elon James White and I know exactly what you’re thinking. You’re currently looking at a large Black man and yet you don’t ‘HEAR’ one. Some of you may be asking: ‘What type of sorcery IS this?’ “

And laughter ensued. The laughter wasn’t because that was SO funny. They laughed because I let the audience know, that I KNOW, that I’m not the “Right Type” of Black. That put them at ease.

Since then I’ve taken on the concept of Black head on. I joke, I make videos, I write, I tweet. I am constantly Blacking it up. And you know what? I have moments when I look at my body of work and wonder to myself: Should I really keep tackling this “Black” thing? Should I lay off it?

Then the past 2 weeks occurred.

It started with my *cough* White girlfriend’s parents acknowledging that I’m not what they want for their daughter. This was something they had decided upon hearing of my Negro coloring a long time ago, but felt the need to let it be known again Independence weekend.(Happy 4th!). Then I get 1000 tweets about the Valley Swim Club turning away a group of young Black kids because they might change the “complexion and atmosphere” of the club. Next, I sit through four days of Supreme Court judge confirmation hearings that may have been one of the most racist government-sanctioned events I’ve witnessed in my life. This was followed up by a segment on CNN on segregated proms, and then watching Pat Buchanan freak out about the rights of White males.

As a Black man/minority/not a White male, I find Pat Buchanan’s rant outrageous. Forget the ludicrous claim that “White people built America and deserve more” because thats so idiotic and laughable its not even worth my energy. To imply that affirmative action is somehow ridiculous is to suggest that the socioeconomic ripples of slavery and discrimination are absolutely moot. This breaks down to saying what America did to a people–My People, mind you–should be forgotten. That racism is now “fixed” and that any further discussion is simply bellyaching. Taking responsibility is one thing. Claiming that real issues are pure nonsense is another. [

I watched Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Jeff Sessions pat America on the back because of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Ricci vs. destefano case. White males are now getting promotions, so the American justice system should be applauded. How many minorities have been ignored? Currently there’s a young man, Eric Frimpong, from Ghana sitting in prison because a White girl, who was dangerously intoxicated and can’t remember what happened, claims he raped her. None of his DNA was found on her, but her White boyfriend’s was. Her boyfriend has not been considered a suspect. The Black guy OBVIOUSLY did it.

That seems really justice-y.

To praise America for the firefighter case is offensive. I’m not arguing whether it was right or wrong (although John Payton of the NAACP Legal Defense fund makes some clear arguments why the case isn’t so cut and dry), I’m arguing that there are more pressing issues that have gone through our system and have been ignored.

I understand that the confirmation hearings are not really confirmation hearings, but a showcase for the Republican party to clarify where they stand on the issues, but as a Black man, it struck a chord in my soul. It created an “Us vs. Them” environment. If that was the GOAL, then kudos, job well done.

So here I am. I’m Blacking it up even NOW. I have the appearance of a angry, fist-pumping, screaming, militant Negro. Please note: I am NOT an angry, fist-pumping, screaming, militant Negro. I’m not sitting here with my big afro thinking about how I’m going to take down the White man. I am an Average Black Person. I would much rather play my Xbox 360 and watch reruns of Scrubs (yes, I said it). I would much rather argue why Batman can, in fact, take down ANYBODY. I don’t want to rant and rail against the system and the perceptions of Blacks: I’m FORCED to. Why? Because I’m not deaf, dumb, and blind. If I had those three ailments perhaps I wouldn’t be able to tell how NOT post-racial America actually is.

That’s not true. I’d probably still feel it.

“Right Type” of Black = why we can’t rise as a people.

The “Negro, You ain’t Black” comment was a bit of hyperbole on your part, right? RIGHT?!!?

    Awesome post.

This may be too personal, but do you feel like your gf’s parent’s view of you will hinder your relationship going forward? I ask this because being in a monoracial rlp. and having to deal with in-laws tripping is enough to make me want to scream, so I know that having in-laws that totally do not want me in their family, might have me ripping my hair out.

Secondly, I’ve been loving your tweets and posts. I am a new follower and I love that you are an average black person and one who is not afraid to make his opinion known.

Lastly, love Scrubs, but stopped watching a season or two ago and yes Batman is a bad mutha-shut-yo-mouth!

In defense of angry, fist-pumping, screaming, militant Negroes….

I feel like you do a great job of voicing many “average” black peoples frustrations with current events. What I have found more and more is that it doesn’t feel right to be polite anymore. As a kid it was almost like a game to ignore thinly veiled racism and reduce it to ignorance. Now I see in so many different venues that people (cough Pat Buchanan cough) aren’t even afraid anymore to be outwardly racist and spread dangerous ideas.

Though I hate the scary black person stereotype, part of me wishes that people were a bit more afraid to make such threats to my livelihood.

And umm… “Scrubs” is one of the funniest shows on TV. I will shout it from the rooftops. Plus, one of my fave authors, Angela Nissel (Black woman) of “The Broke Diaries” is on their writing team. She rocks. Take that, take that.

@DJStylus: w/r/t your question abt the hyperbole, i am witness to the fact that this does happen. something about being able to express oneself in full sentences with syntax and grammar intact automatically poses a threat to the Card status. That was a sound of disgust…

I started to respond to this piece, but there’s too much to say.

Wish you hadn’t changed your stand up to address that “black” issue.

IMO it gives credence to the ridiculous notion that somehow you must be an exception because you’re not what they’re accustomed to seeing on tv.

I didn’t “Change” it as much as I addressed what everyone seemed to be confused by. Stand-Up comes from a place of truth. My “Truth” was a frustration with people trying to cast me in their “Black Guy” mold. Hence my new comedic voice.

Great post. I too am an average Black person but still feel like the “monkey in the cage” when White people want to touch the hair or give the “negro quiz” (ie What is YOUR favorite Beatles song?) People are uneasy with my regular-ness and TRY to bring Blackness out of me I suppose to make the situation more comfortable. For the past year and a half or so, since Obama’s rise to presidency, I think we’ve all been put under the microscope for closer inspection and the MSM is rolling in it.

love the shout-out to eric frimpong… not near enough is being said about his case!

anywho, lots of folks believe in the notion of “post-racial america” ~ not me. i think that barack becoming president has, and will continue to, highlight how we REALLY feel about race here in america… white ppl have been able to say “i believe in equality” w/ out having to really PROVE it, but an african-american president calls that bluff for better or worse. add to that the white panic being stoked by the repugnant party (hi pat, howdy palin, hey lindsay, rush, sessions et al) and bam: we get two weeks like this.

interestingly enough, a friend of mine just told me about an incident that happened at the country club she works at whose circumstances are surprisingly similar to the one at the philly pool. it has all stayed behind-the-scenes, so i’ll not name names, but it has definitely effected the way she feels about the ppl she works for.

well, i guess i should end this blog-jacking… :) thanks for being one of the FEW blogs today to discuss pat in all his craziness.

Hey, thank you, your writings are just as powerful as your videos!

I love this post because it makes clear how downsides of being black still just seems to follow black people around. “Why are they so hung up on being black?” my white friends sometimes say. “Why do they always gotta make such a big deal out of just being black? I don’t make a big deal out just being white.”

Well yeah, I always say back, but being white IS a big deal for you. It follows you around, like, all, the, time. You just don’t see it. And if you did see it, you might start to understand something about why black people sometimes “make a big deal” about being black. It is a big deal, and so is your being white.

Wow. Read about your gf’s parents and felt punched in the gut on your behalf. just one more example of everything you’re writing about, all of it horrible, but I just had such a visceral reaction to your treatment by people who should be supportive of their daughter and you. All the racism you’re writing about is (obviously!) beyond unconscionable…so it just feels extra deplorable that they know you write about it and, instead of being proud of you for it, are able to just heap more racism atop it — a racism cherry to top off the whole f—ing racism sundae you’ve been addressing. “While you’re at it, Elon, here ya go!” I just can’t get over it. I can only hope you were able to turn to your girlfriend for appropriate emotional support, I really do. Goddamn.

    Wise Latina woman, here.

I want to just laugh at Pat B, but holy crap.

My Mexican-American dad served in the US Navy during WWII, and my uncle served with the US Army in Europe. At Dad’s funeral in ’07 an officer walked out with a folded flag and the old, familiar “on behalf of a grateful nation” speechlet. I was insanely proud [and yeah, crying buckets. Miss you, Dad]. We’re free today thanks in part to the sacrifices made by my father, my uncle, and many other Mexican-American kids [and their Japanese-American friends] who served in the US military during WWII.

Does that make my dad American enough for you, Pat? Seriously, what will it take?

    I know — dumb question.

Pat’s the kind of guy who complains about “hyphenated Americans” like my Mexican-American dad: “Why can’t we all just be _Americans_?” [/whiny voice]

But Pat’s latest is proof that nothing — no amount of work, service, sacrifice, achievement, nothing — will ever be enough to make a brown, Spanish-speaking man like my father as “American” as Pat Buchanan imagines himself to be.

For the record, my smart, brave, hardworking dad was the best kind of American.

Pat B, on the other hand? [shakes head in disgust] Not even close. Not even in the same ballpark. Hell, not even in the same planetary system.

IIRC, William F. Buckley fired Pat from the National Review for his antisemitism. MSNBC…?

That seems to be the way of things. The Average Black Person can’t just be. We’re always being asked to prove just how “black” we are. I go out of my way to not discuss certain issues with some of my acquaintances (MJ’s recent passing and the swim club for instance) because it then serves as a focus point for the others to decide what kind of mold to put me in. Post-racial America this is not.

And Scrubs is hilarious. It’s the only TV show I would own on DVD.

Why should we get up in arms about Eric Frimpong sitting in prison? Emmitt Till, O.J., Kobe – black men have been catching hell because of white women for years. Nowadays, ya’ll are walking into the situation with your eyes open. Anyone with brain knows that there will be some adverse consequences for a brother if a white woman ever changes her mind and decides she’s been raped. While its a free country and people can choose who they date, people shouldn’t expect the black community to get irate when their choice bites them in the ass.
